Abbott blinks - paid parental scheme put off


The gov, up the proverbial senate creek, has had no choice. This is not some sly political Howard like move by the gov to win back votes (you know, like Howard used to do a few months before calling an election; "clearing the decks"). This is damage control, pure and simple. 

Their budget is hopelessly bogged in the senate, with key parts of it going to be blocked in the months ahead. To try and get through a scheme as unfair, absurd, and obviously geared specifically for the wealthy, through the senate in such a climate would only focus more attention on it's absurdity. Not the least that absurdity being political.
But a government source said the scheme had been placed in the “too-hard basket” because the Coalition was fighting on too many fronts and struggling to get its basic budget measures passed by the Senate. 

Several other sources said a message had been discreetly sent to Mr Abbott that his pet policy could face an embarrassing defeat in the Senate. Read more
