Human rights hypocrites - Australia

The first thing I thought when I saw that cartoon was, what a bunch of hypocrites we are in Australia. How can we talk about human rights when our gov is running asylum seeker gulags on offshore islands? Or forcing Aboriginal people in Western Australia off their land? Or sending asylum seekers back to where they fled from? When the US still has the death penalty, along with China? When the drug traffickers knew of the risks? When Abbott may very well find himself in the dock at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity? And on and on.

This self righteous bullshit going on in the main stream and social media at the moment is just that; self righteous bullshit. And I'm not the only one who thinks this either.
Dr Maguire said Australia’s principled stance on the executions is undermined by the fact it is flouting international law when it comes to the treatment of asylum seekers. Australia is opposed to capital punishment under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, however the country also routinely ignores the same document when it comes to refugees which means “it’s a pretty weak position” for the country to take internationally, she said.

“The idea of human rights is that they belong to all people all the time and it’s not up to governments to pick and choose when they can be respected and when they can be violated. When they start to be treated in that way they lose their universality. They become open to cultural interpretations and we have various countries around the world deciding what rights people can be entitled to.” more
Before any of us can point a finger, this gov and it's policies must go. The policies buried in the scrap heap of the Lieberals.
