Dopey Dutton vs Doctors - refusing to return children to jail

Update: Victoria's health minister has thrown her support behind the doctors. The stand-off has intensified, now with the state gov in open rebellion at the federal gov.

Now there's a headline you don't see every day in Australia. But alas it's true. How such a situation could even be here is a testament to both Labor and Lieberal parties, who've been in a race to the bottom over Australia's treatment of asylum seekers who arrive here by boat.

Despite draconian new laws drawn up by the Abbott gov threatening jail to medical personnel who complained about conditions in asylum detention centres, it hasn't stopped doctors in Melbourne taking a stand. At the Melbourne Royal Children's Hospital, doctors there are refusing to return children back to detention centres after treatment.

We now have a direct stand off between doctors who have signed an oath not to harm patients, and the Lieberal Turnbull gov blathering on about stopping the boats. It will be interesting to say the least, to see how our bright shiny new prime minister handles this. To not return the children to detention will be a major departure of the Lieberals from the Abbott "stop the boats" policy and rhetoric.
Workers at Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital are refusing to discharge children back to detention centres over concerns for their health.

Staff yesterday held a protest to demand the Federal Government halt its policy of holding children in detention, the reports.

“We see a whole range of physical, mental, emotional and social disturbances that are really severe,” one doctor at the protest told the newspaper.

“We have no hope of improving these things when we have to discharge our patients back into detention.”

Approximately 100 children are locked up in immigration detention centres within Australia.

More than 400 staff members from the Melbourne hospital gathered at a protest yesterday to show their support for the cause, demanding the government remove children from the detention facilities. more
