The first gay couple have been issued their marriage licence at Rowan County, watched on by much media. Kim Davis remains in jail, declaring from her cell the marriage licences are invalid without her signature.

So Kim Davis is locked up in jail and won't be released unless she issues marriage licences to gays. Which she won't. But even more than that, she has refused to not interfere with her deputies who have said that they're fine to give the gays a licence. 

Who the fuck does she think she is? A one person mission from god to turn the US into a theocracy?

IMO she wasn't jailed for her conscience, she was jailed for contempt of court. There's a big difference. She's certainly not the first one to be jailed for contempt.

Psychologist visit at a low point

Had the monthly psychologist meeting last week. I was feeling pretty low when I went. He asked out of ten how would my mood have been, my answer was about 3.

There's a couple of things behind it it seems. There is of course the court case with psycho nephew in just over 2 weeks now. Causing anxiety and the like. Unfortunately as I'm the main witness the psychologist isn't able to discuss in any meaningful way the issue around it as to how I'm feeling. It's to do with "contaminating the witness".

He did however point out that all I had to do was to say exactly what I saw, to the best of my memory. I explained the almost video replay in my head from the hallway where the bashing happened, and that even all this time later (it happened on new years) it was still there in my head like it happened yesterday. Along with the feelings of horror and shock that went along with it at the time. There's nothing I have to try and remember, the memories are there hitting me in the face.

The other issue is one that can't be particularly helped. The isolation and depression that can come from poverty. Told him about the 5 days we recently had with nothing. David scrounging around the house looking for ten cents to get enough for cigarette papers. Not sure what happened that fortnight but it was pretty depressing. It's not like that every fortnight.

So both of us are sort of stranded at home for days on end at times. Everything gets paid but there's nothing left to engage and be a part of society in a normal way. It's very isolating. This of course is simply because of the high rent we pay relative to what we get; over 50% of income.

I went through that sort of isolation with my wife, but for a different reason. She was chronically ill and over the years as she slowly got worse and more incapacitated we as a couple ended up being very isolated socially. It was one of the big things after she died, me trying to reconnect to the community. It's a hard thing to do. Even when the cause of the isolation evaporates.

I at least agree with him that this is a pivotal moment for the US with Kim Davis's arrest, but for very different reasons. Davis became the figurehead of christian discrimination, defiant to the last. She has now become the figurehead of a past getting swept away for inclusion and acceptance.

Kim Davis is from a Pentecostal church - US

Doesn't look like the church has a website. Can't find anything online. Some of those Pentecostal churches though have very strict "holiness standards". I know as I was in one decades ago; the United Pentecostal Church. They didn't believe in watching TV or cutting hair. No pants on ladies as that was wearing man's clothes, and on and on. Seems this is the sort of church Kim Davis is from.

The clerk, Kim Davis of Rowan County, Ky., was ordered detained for contempt of court and later rejected a proposal to allow her deputies to process same-sex marriage licenses that could have prompted her release.

Instead, on a day when one of Ms. Davis’s lawyers said she would not retreat from or modify her stand despite a Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, Judge David L. Bunning of United States District Court secured commitments from five of Ms. Davis’s deputies to begin providing the licenses. At least two couples planned to seek marriage licenses Friday.

“The court cannot condone the willful disobedience of its lawfully issued order,” Judge Bunning said. “If you give people the opportunity to choose which orders they follow, that’s what potentially causes problems.” more  

Hastie whinges about attention on his family - whaaaaa.......

H Andrew Hastie has done a Latham and cried to the media and all to leave his family and religion out of it all. Whhhaaaaaa........ Oh the poor dear, his family is getting national attention.

All I can say to that is well, how does it feel? If he wants his family left alone he should leave mine alone too and allow us marriage equality. What business of his is  David and I's sexuality? On the other side of Australia? Across three time zones? 

Then after saying to leave his family and religion alone, he says how proud he is of his Anglicanism. Won't answer questions about creationism (he believes in it) and his wife as secretary was involved in some church blog post about gays. But all of this is, according to him "Off limits".

In a forthright statement at the start of a campaign appearance, the former SAS captain hinted that questions of his theology were being pushed by his political opponents. 

Mr Hastie's father is a Presbyterian minister who it is understood believes in creationism. 

Asked about his own beliefs and the possibility he shared his father's creationist views Mr Hastie declared it was off limits.

The 32-year-old Mr Hastie also declared he was opposed to same-sex marriage. 

"On the question of gay marriage that's been put to me, I am personally opposed to same-sex marriage but I am very much in favour of the Australian people having a popular vote to decide this crucial issue," he said. 

"It is a foundational issue to Australian society and therefore it should be decided by Australian people and not the political elite." 

That response was given as part of an answer to a question about a blog post his wife Ruth had uploaded while she was working as a receptionist at a church in Perth. more

Why? Surely if an unrepresentative swill believes in creationism and an invisible sky man that just zapped the world together in 7 days, then that's an issue if he wants to represent the public - the vast majority of Australians don't. Does he think the earth is only 6,000 years old too? 

If he doesn't agree with gay marriage, that's definitely an issue. If his family is so involved in antigayness that his wife thinks nothing of uploading an anti-gay blog post for the church, then surely that's an issue? How much more antigayness do you need in the Lieberal party FFS?

Safety concerns from industry over ChAFTA - workers qualifications

Would you allow someone to work on your car who hadn't met Australia qualifications in the trade to do so? Well if the China free trade agreement goes ahead as it is then that may very well be the case.

This isn't a beat up from those dastardly unions, this is from an industry body. The Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce in fact.

Executive director of the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce Geoff Gwilym says there is a skills shortage in his industry and his members have no problem with some positions being filled by skilled migration. 

“The fact that these workers are not subject to the same tests as local automotive workers is a safety issue for prospective employees and all motorists,” Mr Gwilym told Australian Automotive. 

“Where is the government’s engagement with industry? The first industry heard of trades being bartered away is in the press. That is unacceptable.” 

Mr Gwilym argued that the FTA undermined Australia’s apprenticeship system, which placed rigour around trades training. 

“This new Free Trade Agreement basically says, ‘If you are a mechanic in China, you are a mechanic in Australia’. How does the motorist know if the person working on their vehicle has the necessary qualifications to perform services and repair tasks to a safe standard?” more  

NYT's rips Australia new asshole - asylum seekers

If there was any doubt about how other countries feel about the inhumane way Australia and the Abbott gov treats Asylum seekers there isn't now. The New York Times has come out with a damning criticism of the Abbott gov's policy of turning back boats, and the two party policy of offshore detention.

The alternative Labor policy isn't much better from what I can see. Sort of Abbott lite. Toning down on the treatment a bit but still keeping the options open of turning back boats.

With Australia's population having the most immigrants per capita of any other country in the world (yes more than the US too) many of us are left scratching our heads in anger, wondering how the fuck our unrepresentative swill arrived at this disgusting point. Both parties in a race to the bottom to see who can be the meanest to the most vulnerable.

The world’s war zones are all but certain to continue to churn out an extraordinary number of refugees and economic migrants in the years ahead. Those people understandably will head to the most prosperous nations, hoping to rebuild their lives. It is inexcusable that some find themselves today in situations that are more hopeless and degrading than the ones that prompted them to flee. more

Truth is most Australians aren't like that at all. Yes there's the usual redneck rhetoric, but much of that is fed by the gov and the Murdoch media massage. A few western Sydney seats have a whole bunch of Aussie rednecks, those seats being important in a federal election. So we've ended up with both major parties developing policies that pander to those racists.

Sadly, racism often simply breeds more racism. It would be a human and moral tragedy if other nations adopted Abbott's hard line stance on refugees.
