Coming from New Zealand it's hard for me to get my head around. That a kiss between two people of different races could have such an impact, yet it did. The show involved was the lowest rated Star Trek episode of the 1960's and wasn't even aired in the US south. Incredible.
This was also the reason that gay issues were left untouched in the show at that time.
