Labor ahead by a nose in Canning - latest poll

Abbott is going there to "support" the "outstanding" Canning Lieberal candidate who only in recent years may well have faced charges of cutting off the hands of dead enemy victims, being as he was the in charge person at the time.

"Life is pretty busy and you never know what's going to come up but certainly it is my intention to be there to support an outstanding candidate," Mr Abbott told reporters in the Torres Strait on Wednesday. A union-commissioned poll shows the Abbott government could be headed for trouble in the by-election. Labor's candidate Matt Keogh is slightly ahead on the two-party preferred basis - 50.1 per cent - with Mr Hastie on 49.9 per cent. The Liberal vote is significantly down on the result Mr Randall secured at the 2013 election, where he won the seat with 61.8 per cent of the two-party preferred vote. The ReachTEL poll of 768 voters, published in The West Australian newspaper on Wednesday, was commissioned by the union United Voice. more
