India to stop coal imports within 3 years

I have a vague memory of this at the end of last year, but it's even more pertinent now. After the evil Greenie "vigilante saboteurs" delayed the carbon bomb Galilee Basin coal mine near the Great Barrier Reef, the gov is now trying to change the laws against said evil Greenies. Looks very much like it will fail BTW.

The point is that the Abbott gov insists that the coal is to lift poor India citizens out of poverty (this whilst they slash foreign aid). How evil of the Greenies to stop such a humanitarian effort! Oh the humanity!  For gods sake think of the poor!

However this overlooks a basic fact, that's been around now for about 9 months; the fact that India is aiming to stop all foreign coal imports, likely within three years.
India Power and Coal Minister Piyush Goyal said the nation - the world's third largest buyer of international coal - would stop imports of thermal coal, 'possibly' within three years as the country steps up domestic production, Reuters reports.

According to the news service, the new Modi Government has asked state-owned giant Coal India, the world's largest coal miner, to more than double output to 1 billion tonnes by 2019 while the government has also opened up the domestic coal sector to private competition.

"I'm very confident of achieving these targets and am very confident that India's current account deficit will not be burdened with the amount of money we lose for imports of coal," Goyal told a conference, Reuters reports. "Possibly in the next two or three years we should be able to stop imports of thermal coal." more
Even if it akes 5 years, WTF is the point of wrecking the Reef and digging up a carbon bomb that will fuck the planet?
