Dozens of bystanders took photographs on their smart phones during the road works and many took to social media to express their outrage and disappointment.Oh well, this was David the other day before it went, showing his swimmers. It's a funny photo, note the lady behind him looking a touch horrified.
Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich has called on NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Roads and Ports Duncan Gay to apologies to the LGBTI community for using emergency powers to remove the crossing.
Greenwich said RMS crew told him they were diverted from scheduled road works at Ultimo to remove the crossing.
“It’s one thing to call for the removal, but to divert RMS crews under the guise of emergency road works is an aggressive act that Sydneysiders will not forget,” Greenwich said in a statement.
“Local businesses, residents, and the City of Sydney Council were not given any notice. This even surprised the RMS crew who at the last minute were instructed to remove the crossing.
“The Premier must apologise for this aggressive act against both Sydney and the LGBTI community.” more

Rainbow crossing removed
Well actually it's still there, but under asphalt. Happened suddenly without notice to anyone, and even the workers had to be diverted from planned roadworks to do it. I smell a rat in this, and so do many others. People have been constantly taking pictures of it ever since it went down, and the tourists loved it. Here it is costing $30,000 to be covered over.
