Asked if he was confident Mr Assange could take on the job if he were elected, Mr Barns replied: ''It would be up to the government to secure the opportunity for Mr Assange to come back to Australia.I'd vote for him.
''The situation would be that you would have a person whom the voters of Victoria have elected and decided that they want to represent them in the Senate, and you would have an Australian government, which to date - along with the opposition - has not lifted a diplomatic or political finger to assist Mr Assange in preventing him from being extradited to the United States, where he would face almost certain torture.'' more

Julian Assange - bid for senate seat
Julian Assange, still locked in the Ecuador embassy in London and arch enemy of the US gov, has launched a bid for a senate seat in Australia. His party is the Wikileaks Party. There's some doubts as to whether he'll be able to fulfil his duty and actually turn up if elected, but an interesting twist is that it would put huge pressure on the Australian gov to actually do something about his predicament.
