Labor to oppose a GST increase

Well finally Bill Shorten has something to strike a blow to shiny new Malcolm. It would be a huge election issue, with Labor opposing an increase in the GST and the Lieberals going to an election promising it. Will this take the shine off Mr Teflon?

Paul Keating won the un-winnable election in the 1990's against Paul Hewson with a big scare campaign over the GST. It all fell apart with the birthday cake interview, where Hewson fumbled around how much a birthday cake would increase under a GST. He failed miserably, with that interview becoming the defining moment of the entire campaign.

Howard did win promising the 10% GST, but he made the election about everything but the GST, then when in office claimed he had a mandate to bring it in. Bloody sly bastard he was, a master politician and manipulator of the people.

Has Turnbull got the same political skills as Howard? We may well find out.
“If the government thinks they can just simply increase the GST because it’s the only way Australians will get personal income tax cuts or the only way the states will reduce taxes, they are plain wrong,” Bowen said.

“The Liberal plans would see Australians pay $68 billion extra in tax every year.

“Make no mistake, when the Liberals and Nationals talk about increasing the GST, they are talking about working Australians, everyday Australians paying more tax. Labor Herald
