Marriage is a constantly evolving institution, and same-sex marriage is an inevitable part of that evolution—there's no such thing as a 'traditional' marriage.
That's the view of Stephanie Coontz, who's charted the history of marriage in numerous books.
She's a history professor at Evergreen State College in the US, and when the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of same-sex marriage in June, Justice Anthony Kennedy cited the work of Professor Coontz.
Stephanie Coontz is currently in Tasmania, and took part in a conversation on marriage equality at the University of Tasmania last night.
