Cashless welfare card trial stalled in the senate

The Big Brother Orwellian gov cashless welfare card trial in South Australia has been stalled in the senate amid concerns over lack of consultation with the legislation.

Good fuckin job. I mean seriously, what a fuckin nerve the gov has in even suggesting this US type poor card bullshit. Apart from the indignity of everyone in the supermarket line knowing that you've been reduced to surviving on welfare, WTF more does the gov want to control in our personal lives? How many times we fart a day? It makes about as much sense to me.

It may be a good idea in extreme cases of money mismanagement or drug and alcohol abuse, to keep the person with an actual roof over their head and not begging on the streets, but such a card has no place in the homes of average people who find themselves on welfare. It would just be a paternalistic kick in the guts. Another body blow in unfortunate circumstances.
Labor and a number of key crossbenchers have called for more time to refine the legislation, saying that the consultation period with community members in Ceduna has been insufficient.

The independent senator Nick Xenophon told reporters on Monday that the government needs to go back to Ceduna to “thrash out areas of concerns with the community” about the trial’s implementation.

“They can not ignore the will of the community,” Xenophon said.

Xenophon visited Ceduna with fellow independent senator Jacqui Lambie earlier this month. “While listening to community concerns, it became apparent that a significant section of the community, mainly non-Indigenous stakeholders, had not been properly consulted with – and their interests were not been properly represented,” Lambie will tell the Senate when the bill is up for debate.

“Based on that meeting I had in Ceduna, I was prepared to vote against this legislation should the government not delay presentation of the bill before the Senate.” more
