David and I honestly tried last year, with my partnered pension and him on Newstart after he was discriminated against. With the rent at $760 a fortnight it was impossible. We just couldn't do it. Every week that went by we just went further and further into debt. We never recovered and I ended up having to file for bankruptcy to clear the credit card debt. By that time it was over $30,000.
The only solution was for David to go on the Carer Payment for me, along with the Carer Allowance. It just about doubled what he got from Newstart, and at least it's a survivable amount now. Certainly not a career choice as we can go for days without a cent, but we stay afloat.
