Australian Muslim NSW politician racially profiled at LA airport - interrogated

Perhaps we do need to issue a US travel warning for Australian Muslims entering the US?

A Greens politician from the New South Wales state upper house has been interrogated at Los Angeles airport. She is a Muslim of Pakistani origin.

She was entering the country on a fact finding study trip to learn about drug law reform, and to see family. She was fingerprinted and asked how she got the Australian passport, before being interrogated.

This is how the US treats Australian politicians now, by racially profiling them and interrogating them if they're of a particular ethnicity or religion.
New South Wales Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi has criticised security procedures at Los Angeles International Airport after she was interrogated.

Dr Faruqi is touring the United States as part of a fact-finding trip on drug law reform and also to visit family.

"Being asked how 'we got' Australian passports and then about my Pakistani history clearly points towards racial profiling," Dr Faruqi said in a statement.

"It is quite ridiculous, nerve wracking and scary to be treated so suspiciously for no reason and sent off to be interrogated.

"There is no excuse for treating people this way. "I've come to the US to find out more about drugs policy reform and to meet family.

"To be treated with such hostility at Los Angeles airport is the last thing you expect."

Dr Faruqi migrated from Pakistan to Australia in 1992 with her young family and joined the Greens Party in 2004.

The ABC has sought a response from the airport. ABC
