Food charity

Following Centrelink's instructions to seek help from charity, I have set about doing so. I have no idea how to access food from charity as I've worked for decades and never needed it, so am a bit lost. However I looked online (do poor people have the internet?) and came across a very good sounding one called the Food Distribution Network. Although it's mainly for older frail aged people who have trouble getting out to get food, it also specifically mentions people with HIV. So I rang them Friday.

The number I rang was in the city, which unfortunately doesn't deliver here. However he gave me another number that was in the local area and said they were part of the same food distribution network. So I rang them. The lady dealing with assessment wasn't in until today, who promptly rang me this morning just after 9am. Very nice sounding lady, very friendly, told her a bit about our situation: that I was on the DSP apparently supposed to support David whilst Centrelink crossed it's i's and dotted it's t's. This whilst paying $380 rent a week :s  Both HIV+. Both undergoing complicated and long drawn out issues, bla bla.

She said it sounds very much like we qualify, and two of them from the charity are coming next Monday for the assessment and the first delivery would be the following day. It's $12 for a box of fresh fruit and vegetables, delivered fortnightly. So there you go, that sounds like something finally going right :)
The Food Distribution Network provides home delivery of boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables to frail aged older residents, and people with moderate, severe or profound disabilities and their carers who reside within the City of Sydney LGA and part of the Marrickville LGA, as well as to people living with HIV who reside within the surrounding areas. Our aim is to assist people to remain healthy and live independently at home with the delivery of affordable, nutritious food.

We buy bulk wholesale produce twice a week from the Sydney Markets at Flemington using money collected in advance from clients. Volunteers unpack the truck on returning to our Botany premises from the markets and individual boxes are then made up for home delivery to clients either weekly or fortnightly. more
