Firstly, Police commissioner Scipione, otherwise known to us Sydney locals as some kind of hitler, says there's nothing to suggest as yet that this is an act of terrorism:
Mr Scipione said the siege does not appear to be linked to terrorism arrests this morning.Secondly, it's one armed man FFS. Not to belittle what the hostages are going through in the cafe and certainly hope there's a peaceful resolution soon. But it's one fuckin man. They shut down half the bloody city. Over one fuckin man.
He said police were treating the siege as a hostage situation at the moment, but were prepared to escalate their response if needed.
"We have not yet confirmed this is a terrorism-related event," he said. more
Consider the relo's of the people inside. How are they gonna feel with everyone screaming terrorists terrorist! Give them a bloody break. Stop the speculation and get a fuckin grip!
BTW with the city locked down people are having enormous problems getting home from work. Uber are charging a minimum of $100 to go from the city to the airport.
My advice would be to take a breath and have a pleasant walk across Hyde part to Oxford St. All the buses are running there, I know because I had a specialist appt at At Vincents hospital this afternoon. I got the bus to Taylor Square and home again without the slightest of problems.
Update:
New Matilda gives 10 predictions from Martin place. One of them below:
10. The NSW Police – for all their occasional failings – will distinguish themselves throughout this incident, and lead the call for community calm. moreUpdate 2:
From Junkee:
For now, that is all we know. We do not know who the armed man or men are, or what they want. We do not know how long this will last, or how it may end. We do not know how many people are being held in the cafe. One way or another, these things will become self-evident as time passes and the situation changes. Since the matter is now in the hands of the police on the scene and the man or men inside the cafe, there is very little anyone else, yourself included, can do.Update 3:
That is not to say there is nothing you can do. Already, false and inaccurate information, unfounded speculation and expressions of hatred and intolerance have taken on a life of their own, spreading panic and confusion far more effectively than one man with a gun ever could. People on or near the scene, who are understandably shaken and upset, have already made a number of inaccurate statements on the situation — particularly in regards to the flag hung in the window — that have since been widely disseminated, and will be taken as fact by people caught up in the moment. 7 News wrongly claimed the flag was an “ISIS flag” in a tweet which has since been deleted. more
The Daily Terrorgraph makes up it's own story again. Those poor families of the hostages, seeing that. Despicable.
