Welfare changes "a breach of human rights" - bipartisan report parliament

The cross benchers are standing firm. So unfortunately is the gov, despite everyone screaming from the rooftops it's wrong.

There's a lot of angst with the Newstart thing at the moment. A gov dominated report backs everything the gov wants to do (6 month wait and all), no surprises there.

What is surprising is a committee report on the Newstart changes (which included members of the Lieberals) unanimously agreed that the 6 month waiting period is a breach of human rights. Namely, the right to social security and an adequate living standard.
The Government has proposed a six-month waiting period before young people without a job can receive unemployment benefits.

A bipartisan parliamentary report found the Federal Government would breach its international obligations if it goes ahead with the proposal.

The report from the Joint Committee on Human Rights said "the committee considers that the measure is incompatible with the right to social security and the right to an adequate standard of living". more
No point in trying to get the gov to listen to it though. The committee was started under the previous gov and not binding to the gov. Well surely there must morality to consider? What's more, even Lieberals now (well the ones on that committee) agree that the changes are a violation of human rights.

The gov's on the mat over this one.
