Malcolm Fraser blasts Canberra

For people overseas, Malcolm Fraser is an ex conservative prime minister of Australia, leading the Liberal party about 30 years or so ago. The same party that spawned that utterly revolting John Howard, along with Howard's sidekick Tony Abbott who I consider a dangerous clown.

Perhaps voices of reason in the asylum seeker debate are becoming more apparent? I've been disgusted for years over the way Australia has treated these people, going right back to Howard and the Tampa, when Howard used those most vulnerable people as a race card going on to win an election that he looked like loosing.

Malcolm Fraser has been more a voice of moderation as both major parties moved to the right during the 80's and 90's. Now he's come out in support of the Greens. I find that quite astonishing in today's political climate. Both major parties paint the Greens as extremist lefties, which they're not. My view is that they're the only sensible ones left there, so who else do I vote for?

What Fraser says about the asylum seeker issue is exactly what I've been saying for years. He absolutely nails it on this one.
Australia's major political parties are engaged in a "race to the bottom" using fear to fuel the debate over asylum seekers, former prime minister Malcolm Fraser says.

"The state of the political debate in Canberra is wretched," Mr Fraser said.

"There's been a race to the bottom of the barrel on refugee and asylum seeker issues.

"They seem to believe that who can get toughest will win most votes."

Mr Fraser said the opposition's policy to turn back the boats would not work, and, while recent talks between Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Indonesian authorities had made progress, the asylum seeker was a world-wide problem that required a global solution.

"Labor and Liberal talk as though Australia is the only target. It's not," he said.

"We are a tiny part of a world problem." Read more
