Already donors that have stopped $300million in aid reaching Uganda over corruption (such a lovely christian nation) are holding off increasing it back to previous levels because of what Uganda is doing to gays. Now Canada is threatening to cut all ties with Uganda over this.
KAMPALA, Uganda—Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni's decision to back an antigay bill is straining relations between the East African nation and its western donors, who extend up to $2 billion in aid every year to the country.BTW there's a video from Ugandan telly but I don't see any point in posting it as much of the accent is completely unintelligible here in Sydney :s
Since Mr. Museveni told lawmakers last week he would sign the bill into law, the U.S., European Union and United Nations have warned the law violates human rights and could jeopardize Uganda's foreign aid.
U.S. President Barack Obama said over the weekend that enacting the law would complicate the U.S.'s "valued relationship with Uganda." The U.S. extends about $400 million in aid to Uganda every year and is a vital military ally for Kampala.
Alintuma Nsambu, Uganda's envoy to Canada, said in an interview Wednesday that he had been summoned by the Canadian Foreign Ministry to explain why Canada shouldn't sever diplomatic ties with Uganda over the antigay bill. He said he had communicated Canada's concerns to the Ugandan government. The Canadian consulate in Kampala didn't immediately respond to calls and emails seeking to confirm the meeting.
Mr. Museveni, facing growing domestic political pressure ahead of the 2016 elections, is likely to ignore the pleas. He is expected to sign the bill into law "within the next few days" according to Simon Lokodo, Uganda's ethics and integrity minister. more
