Pretty much the corporations have completely fucked it up. Australia has long been ripped off with electronics and online content paying higher prices than the northern hemisphere, if it's even available here. So we've abandoned Foxtel en mass and gone for the free downloads. No brainer really.
Even if they managed to change the law through the (possibly) impending TPP, how are they gonna get us all? The ISP's don't want a bar of having to be cops, and you'd have to bust half the bloody population.
Yeah right, good luck with that.
Undeterred though the gov still drags out the corporate scare tactics. However the reality is that that is all it is; corporate scare tactics. The experts say there's absolutely nothing they can do about it :)
Communication Minister Malcolm Turnbull went so far as to encourage copyright holders to take repeat offenders to court, speaking on Sky News this week.So download away Australia. Stick it to Murdoch. Just think of it as a mass Murdoch protest :)
“Rights owners have got to be prepared to actually roll their sleeves up and take on individuals. They’ve got to be prepared to sue people, sue mums and dads and students who are stealing their content,” he said.
“As people recognise that there is a risk they can be sued and have to pay for what they have stolen then the level of infringement and theft will decline.”
So, do you need to be worried about being punished for your downloading habits? And will the government’s proposed measures work to curb online piracy in Australia?
The answer, according to experts news.com.au spoke to today, is a resounding “No”. more
