Fiji PM is a homophobe - tells gays to go to Iceland

Lovely :s

The Fiji prime minister is completely at odds with the western world. No surprises there BTW. Fiji went all xenophobic during their coups, turfing out the India residents and saying Fiji was for the Fijians. The first coup I remember democracy was described as a "foreign flower".

Ironically their economy relies heavily on tourism, from the surrounding western nations to be precise. Said western nations in the process of embracing gayness as a normal part of humanity (as it always has been I might say). The Fiji prime minister however doesn't seem to give the slightest flying fuck about that, making extreme homophobic statements that would fit better in some of those anti-gay African nations rather than the South Pacific region.

I would suggest to any gays in the South Pacific region planning on a holiday to Fiji in the future not to do so, and chose a place better accepting of who you are. Hit them where it hurts; in their tourist economy.
Frank Bainimarama was responding to comments made by Shamima Ali, the head of the Fiji Women's Crisis Centre, on a news programme where she said Fiji should consider allowing same-sex marriage.

But in today's Fiji Sun, Mr Bainimarama is quoted as saying that will not happen in his or Ms Ali's lifetime, saying "Fiji does not need that rubbish."

He says that if a woman wants to marry another woman, "they should go and have it done in Iceland and stay and live there."
Shamima Ali says it was a totally regressive statement towards an LGBT community that struggles with discrimination. Radio New Zealand
