It's interesting to know also that all states must agree to an increase, along with the senate crossbenchers with Labor opposing it. It would be a very unpopular move indeed by any state gov to agree with the federal Lieberals to clobber the poor and slug everyone with a great big tax increase. As federal Labor opposes an increase I can't see the state Labor Victorian and Queensland gov's supporting it.
I was of course dead against the GST right from the start. It took that bloody Howard and his political capacity to get it through.
