243,236 signatures - save the reef

The GetUp petition to save the Great Barrier Reef from becoming a shipping lane for the biggest coal terminal in the world has been presented to the new minister Greg Hunt. The story goes as follows (from the email):
When GetUp members requested a meeting with new Environment Minister Greg Hunt to discuss the importance of saving the Great Barrier Reef, we were told he may not have time to meet with us until the end of the year. But when more than 200 local GetUp members took your 243,236 petition signatures to the Minister's office, something surprising happened. Not only did Minister Hunt personally accept the petition, he agreed to meet with a delegation of members on the spot. Some very articulate members took up the offer, telling the Minister about one of the largest petitions in Australian history, and our huge billboard advertising campaign across Brisbane.

This obviously isn't a petition to be sneezed at. However, apart from all the hoopla from GetUp about their successful petition, and actually being able to meet with the minister himself (oh what a success :s ..... people who represent me and others actually being able to talk to our federal minister about it ......pfffft) all he's actually said is he'll promise he'll "Look at long-term protection of exquisite areas of the Great Barrier Reef", whatever that means. I suppose it's a start just getting him to accept the petition.
