David's victims compensation finally decided on - the end of the nightmare :)

It certainly hasn't been an easy time. Months of being dragged into court by my nephew and brother who were unwilling to admit their guilt, having to relive the event in testifying against them, having their counsel feed questions at us in cross examination that were nothing more than their lies. The last day of court we left after I'd given my testimony as I didn't want to sit their and watch my family lie about what they did to David in our own hallway. It was hard enough for me to have to go through the details of the bashing again in court.

The result was nephew found guilty of grievous bodily harm, heavily fined, a two year good behaviour bond, and two year apprehended violence order to keep the fuck away from David. Only just avoided jail time. Their counsel too was a barrister and therefore very expensive. Brother flying over from New Zealand for both his court appearances, along with accommodation in expensive Sydney for that time. Must have set them back at least $20,000 I'd say. A very expensive bashing.

Little do they know though it's not over yet for them. You see the victims compensation is paid by the New South Wales state gov to David, and then the state gov demands the money paid from my nephew who bashed him. This is completely separate from any court punishment/fines issued. We've kept quiet about it so they have no idea this is coming. It's taken some time to get to this point too after the final court date, which will be doubly surprising for them receiving a letter of demand for the money from the NSW gov. Oh I'd just loooooove to be a fly on the wall when my nephew opens the letter!

As expected it's not a huge amount, as the Lieberal state gov changed the amounts paid a while back. But it's still a recognition by society of the pain and drama caused by the bashing. Also it's the final bit of the whole nightmare saga. Once the money is paid the whole sorry episode is all over, finally
