Hate mail

There was an idea put up by an independent in federal parliament the other day, about the possibility of a referendum on gay marriage in the coming election in Sept. Initially I thought that was a good idea, until I read why most people in the LGBT community would oppose such an idea. Namely that it would be very divisive for Australia, and having the sort of hateful crap all over the media that comes from hard core homophobes would likely be very damaging for LGBT youth and anyone else struggling with their sexuality. Not to mention that the pollies get paid to do a job, and why the fuck should we have to do it for them?

Interestingly, it has been noted in the gay world here that there's an increase in homophobic mail, both electronic and snail mail, since the New Zealand decision to endorse gay marriage.

This one was received in the mail by a lesbian in Caringbah, NSW:

The fear-mongering Defending Natural Marriage letter thunders: “Homosexual radicals are aggressively seeking legislation to silence anyone who disagrees with them. The term ‘homophobia’ is a meaningless slogan to silence opponents. It is not hateful to want to protect our children’s future!” more
OMG, run for the hills everyone! This must be the gay apocalypse!

Have to LMFAO at the bit about "seeking to silence anyone who disagree with them". What hypocrisy! Especially when they want to stop gay marriage for anyone who disagrees with them :s

It looks like the assertion is true, that a divisive referendum would see such hate mail produced and distributed here. In fact the mass marketing style of mailing that we saw in France may well end up here, although we've had mass marketing style mailing for ages here. But there's more. Cover your eyes if you don't like the C-word darlings, and perhaps think of the children.....

This one was sent to a person who wishes to remain anonymous, for obvious reasons.

You can read the whole article here at Same Same here, along with more pictures. I agree with the anonymous person, that it's quite a reminder about how much homophobia still exists in Australia.
