Voters disengage from politics

Looks like I'm not the only one getting pissed off with Canberra. I mentioned the other day that I thought people were finding more representation in their views outside of the political parties in Canberra. I mean their views are getting so far adrift from what's going on in people's minds, it's no wonder large amounts of Australians are now switching off politics altogether.
Australians are disengaging from the political process and have lost confidence in federal government, a new survey finds.

More than a third of respondents say they'll take little or no interest in politics in the lead up to the September election, the University of Melbourne's Citizens' Agenda poll released on Monday shows.

That is more than the amount of people who said they normally take no notice of what's going on in politics.

On the question of confidence, 70 per cent said they had little or no faith in the federal government.

The media fared worse, with 73 per cent saying they had little or no confidence in the press and 71 per cent having lost confidence in television. more
I'm adding myself to that list too.

Marriage equality is one, but there so many other aspects to it. Locking children up on Manus Island is another one. Being in such a close alliance with an out of control US is another. Or losing my free dental with the stroke of a pen.

One of the worst things about it is that there's no consensus in Canberra. Every bloody issue gets turned into some political football. That's pretty hard to take when they're arguing about decisions that affect people's lives. I accept that there will be times where politics gets a bit nasty and partisan. It's just the nature of the game. But in the end we're paying them to do a job, make decisions fairly, not sit there forever politicking about those decisions. I reckon they've all got too caught up in their own mind games. And that includes the press gallery as well.
