Yesterday afternoon I was at home and David was about to leave from Surry Hills for home on the bus. It started raining a bit here at home. Then it was raining a lot. Then it was lightning aplenty and absolutely bucketing down. I went to look out the front windows and the lightning was amazing. Being from New Zealand I've never gotten used to the big lightning storms they have here. People were running along the footpath caught in it, and a firetruck went by on an emergency (a lightning strike somewhere I assume). It was almost dark, even though it was hours before dark.
Rang David in Surry Hills on the way to the bus stop. Told him it was absolutely pissing down here, lightning and all. So he doesn't want to stand under the metal awning at the bus stop and goes to the pub for a beer (any excuse) and waits for the storm to get there and pass. I was actually a bit jealous. I mean what better way to watch a storm than from the pub?
Over the next half an hour at home there were three firetrucks go past with sirens blaring. Eventually the rain tapered off and the lightning and thunder moved out to sea. Later on when David got home they showed some footage and pictures of the storm going over Sydney which were pretty bloody intense. Don't think I've seen quite such an intense cloud formation move through Sydney like that. That's how it was though; it went from a bright sunny day to nearly dark in a matter of minutes. The video below has some excellent shots. Can't believe nobody in the meteorological trade saw it coming.
