Of course you'd expect universities, in the wake of that clown Abbott being elected, to come out with some pretty strong stuff for Abbott. Unfortunately though the University didn't see it the same way. Claiming the word "fuck" was "offensive" and some students it "made them feel unsafe", shut down the stall where they were selling them under threat of being arrested by the police. A bit extreme I thought. Needless to say the students are crying foul:
Jordan Humphreys, a student activist at Macquarie University involved in the incident, said the actions of security were a complete disregard for civil rights.I suppose this is just a taste of the opposition coming to Abbott. Personally I've pretty well switched off federally. If Australians are so stupid as to vote for a lying, racist, homophobic mysonginist who'll no doubt launch an attack on workers through the industrial relations system, then so be it. When people start screaming about losing their penalty rates and union representation, no doubt many of those screaming will have voted for the clown. Hopefully the Senate will save us all....
“This is clearly a case of freedom of speech. Your rights cannot be violated simply because other people find your point of view offensive,” Humphreys said.
“I think Tony Abbott’s racist, sexist and homophobic views are what is really offensive in our society. It was Tony Abbott who said that in regards to homosexuality ‘I feel a bit threatened’. Already the Liberal government has announced cuts to funding for Aboriginal legal aid.”
Another student who was present, Josh Lee, said the actions of security and university officials will only further encourage their activism and continuing fight for equality.
“MQ Uni security guards physically shut down our stall today because we were wearing ‘Fuck Tony Abbott t-shirts. Brought to you by the same ‘democracy’ which gave us Abbott and Palmer in the first place,”
Lee wrote on Facebook. “You know what that means: wear more Fuck Abbott t-shirts all the time!” more
Had to laugh about the hoopla over the Senate result. The main parties are all unhappy that a whole bunch of minor parties have gained Senate seats. Oh the poor dears. They'll have to negotiate with a rabble of independents. That's bloody good not bad! At least we may get to hear a wider variety of views that the constant drone of major party talking points.
