Cheapest supermarkets - Choice magazine survey 2015
Choice has done a new survey of supermarkets in Australia. It's no surprise that Aldi is still the cheapest, but the growth in Coles and Woolworths private labels means they're looking more competitive. Surprisingly Woolworths is the most expensive. If you asked anyone at random they'd likely say Woolworths is cheaper than Coles, but it's not at all.
We have an Aldi nearby and a Coles. David shops at Aldi but there are some things cheaper at Coles, in the sense that you don't have to buy in bulk at Coles. I usually get some packages of meat, chicken, sausages and mince at Coles and a few things of the private label Coles brand which are usually about half the price of the regular brands next to them. Things like frozen fish are much cheaper at Aldi. Specials are big at Coles as well and you can really save a lot there. All up David and I would be spending about $150 a fortnight on groceries. Much of this is because David is a very capable cook and can make stuff out of very little. We also get that fruit and vege delivery for poor people like us, a whole box for $12 a fortnight.
