Abbott forced him to resign. Would've been "resign or your fired" sort of thing. Ha ha, good job. In fact it was people from all sides of politics calling for him to be sacked, even from within his own party with Turnbull putting the boot in. Perhpas Bernardi now rues the day he scoured the internet for this vile insult against all gays.
IT'S surely one of the weirdest falls in federal politics - a shadow parliamentary secretary forced to quit a job for suggesting we could be on the slippery slope towards condoning or embracing bestiality.A bit disappointed he's gone though (well, only to the back bench). I'd have quite liked a gay riot. Lots of sparkly things to gain attention. We could've had drag queens throwing shoes, or mirror-ball missiles, the possibilities are endless!
Cory Bernardi might cite Peter Singer's questioning of the ''taboo'' against sex with animals to back up his claim; supporters like Nick Minchin might argue his speech had been distorted. But there is no way Bernardi could survive - his comments were, quite simply, offensive and unacceptable.
Tony Abbott was fortunate that Bernardi defended them on radio yesterday morning. One suspects the Opposition Leader might possibly have been tempted to try to hang on to Bernardi but for that. To have attempted to do so wouldn't have been tenable - the pain of getting rid of him would just have been drawn out.
While Abbott cast the offence in terms of ill-discipline, it was at heart one of values and standards. Not making that plainer did Abbott no credit - and contrasted his line with Malcolm Turnbull's more forthright condemnation.
