The NRA has it's political puppets in it's pocket. Despite public opinion the senate voted with the NRA, and more lives to be lost.

US senate votes against 4 gun control measures - NRA's "vice-like" grip
It's a familiar US story. Ninety or so percent of the public wanted these measures, but the corporate $ won again.
