Lawrie and his wife are interviewed by Andrew Denton in detail about the pain and indignity Lawrie is enduring after being diagnosed with MS. He relates how much of a comfort it would be, just to have the option there available.

Lawrie and his wife both love each other deeply.

There comes a point with dying people and their partners (as with my late wife and I) where they have the conversation about dying. To let the dying speak for themselves shows the greatest love, to understand even more so. You become part of their dying experience. For the dying to share their final journey with you is extremely difficult, but it can also be extremely beautiful; an expression of your love for each other.

I'd hope that when the time comes for me that I'll be listened to and understood, and the option there for me to end my life at my choosing in the face of suffering. It's not a pleasant subject I know, but dying is part of life.
